How Much a Wooden Pallet Weighs

There are many different types of pallets and pallet sizes. Each has a different weight and load bearing capacity depending on their construction material and pallet dimensions.

We’ll talk about a few different common wooden pallet sizes and how much they weigh, information on plastic pallets will be in another post. If you’d like to talk to one of our experienced pallet engineers about your pallet’s weight and load bearing capacity, start a conversation with us.

48 x 40 Wooden Pallet

The most common of pallet sizes, the GMA pallet tips the scales into the 30 lbs. range. Measuring 48 inches long by 40 inches wide, this pallet is used in a variety of industries, including produce and grocery shipping. These pallets can weigh 33-48 lbs. and is relatively lightweight for how much weight it can carry. These pallets can hold up to 4,600 lbs., that’s nearly as much as an average SUV!

The weight can change depending upon how many deck boards it has and how thick those boards are. Coming in both block pallet and stringer pallet varieties, this pallet is versatile and multi-purpose.

42 x 42 Wooden Pallet

This is the second most common dimension produced by pallet manufacturers and is typically used for transporting telecommunications equipment and paints. This square pallet measures 42 inches in length by 42 inches in width. It weighs approximately 35 lbs. and has a load bearing capacity of up to 3,700 lbs. depending on construction.

48 x 48 Wooden Pallet

The third most common pallet, this one is also square. Used to transport barrels and drums filled with oil and many other liquids, these pallets weigh around 40 lbs. Although a little on the heavier side, these pallets can support up to 3,700 lbs. safely. They are also usual constructed with double stringer boards in the middle of the pallet for maximum sturdiness.

36 x 36 Wooden Pallet

These pallets are most commonly used in the beverage industry and are what carry most of the soda, water, and other drinks you enjoy. They only weigh about 30 lbs. each and can carry up to 4,700 pounds! Talk about small and mighty. They need this extra weight capacity since liquids are so heavy in relation to their volume.

Why Pallet Weight Information is Useful

If you’re shipping and receiving products, the weight of that product matters in many ways. Your equipment will have certain load capacities just like the pallets they move. When calculating fuel costs product weight needs to be taken into account, and your automated systems and racking equipment need to be calibrated to safely move pallets carrying different weight.

But pallet weight needs to be a part of all those calculations. For example, if you’re moving 100,000 lbs. of product on standard 48 x 40 GMA pallets, you could have 4,600 lbs. on each pallet but say you only load it to 4,000 lbs. You would then need to use 25 of them. Depending on the pallet construction, you could have an approximately 825-1,200 pounds of additional weight to deal with just in pallets.

Having these figures should help you better calculate the total weight of your shipments and inventory. This is useful in optimizing transportation, inventory management, and worker safety both inside and outside your facility. Remember however that pallet weight can change depending on how they’re constructed. Deck boards of different thicknesses or in different numbers and the use of stinger boards or blocks will alter weight.
