The Difference Between Combo and Remanufactured Pallets | Pallet Consultants

Pallet Management  |  Pallet Company  |  pallet tips

Combo and remanufactured pallets are often confused for the same product. Combo pallets are made from both new and used material, while remanufactured pallets are made entirely from resized recycled material.

Combo and remanufactured pallets are similar in several ways and can easily be confused for one another, however there are some key differences that make these products distinct.

Combo pallets:

  • Are made from new and recycled lumber
  • Are more dimensionally accurate than recycled or remanufactured pallets
  • More affordable than new pallets

Remanufactured pallets:

  • Are made entirely from recycled wood
  • Are more affordable than combo pallets
  • Most often constructed in custom sizes

The Final Stages of Pallet Recycling

Explained: Pallet Heat Treatment (ISPM 15)

Combo Pallets

Combo pallets are produced from a combination of new and recycled wood. Although a typical combination pallet has new stringers with used deck boards, any mixture can be found. For example, center stringers may be recycled material while the side stringers are new for additional cost savings, and lead boards might be new for enhanced load performance.

Combo pallets are typically used in facilities and operations that want a cost savings over new pallets but still require a high degree of dimensional accuracy and guaranteed performance. Combo pallets are a great middle ground between new and recycled pallets, having advantages of both with no clear downsides. These kinds of pallets are produced in both standard and custom sizes and can be heat treated.

Remanufactured Pallets

Remanufactured pallets are very similar to recycled pallets. They are made entirely of recycled material and are essentially just repurposed recycled pallets. Most commonly produced in custom and specialty sizes smaller than 48 x 40, the majority of remanufactured pallets are used GMA pallets that have been dismantled, cut down to a custom size and remanufactured into a complete pallet.

Remanufactured pallets cost less than combination pallets since they have no new material. Many industries need non-standard pallet sizes for their materials and products but want to avoid the cost associated with custom new pallets. Remanufactured pallets typically help bridge this gap by turning common recycled 48 x 40 GMA pallets into a package that fits the needs of specific applications. Remanufactured pallets can be produced in any size and can be heat treated, but are most commonly made in sizes smaller than the GMA standard.
